With this photo my assignment was to add a photo filter to the image, but to only a selected portion of the image. At first, I was at a loss for what to select to make my photo filter. Then I came across this photo I took and decided that it would be kinda fun to select the pond and make an ocean ripple effect across the water surface, since there wasn't much activity going on in the water when the photo was taken.

This is the result of my playing around with adobe illustrator and utilizing the use of text in an image. The paragraph is an excerpt from a german poem called Elfenlied by Eduard Morike which translates to:

So the elf rubs his eyes,
comes out of his snail-shell house,
and is like a drunken man,
his nap was not finished;
and he hobbles down, tip tap,
through the hazel wood into the valley,
slips right up to the wall...

When looked over the pictures I took and saw this one, it reminded me of something out of a fantasy novel and so I chose this excerpt of text because I felt it embodied the fantasy feel I was going for in this photo. I also designed the text to follow down the path to give the image the icing on the cake that it needed.

This image belongs to my set of photos relating to the new way of seeing assignment that I've been doing. For this photo, I decided to experiment with the different ways I could blend different photos together. With this photo I chose a stock photo from the computer as a backdrop, and then added a round oriental lamp I selected from a different photo to take the place of where the sun would usually be. To add some contrast, I increased the vibrance of the yellow lamp so that it would compliment the blue mountain backdrop nicely.

This next picture of mine is from the seroes called "A New Way of Seeing". Now that i'm slightly better at photoshop, i decided to do a little practice on this photo. I'm definitley going out on a limb with this photo. I experimented with using the selection tools to adjust certain parts of the photo, in this case I increased the color and saturation of the cup and the changed the color of the flower completley to give some contrast. I'm not sure if the cup and the flower stand out too much or not, but either way i'm proud of my efforts and will keep practicing!

This picture is a part of my studio lighting series. I used direct lamp lighting and used side lighting to create the inverse effect of my natural lighting picture. I wanted to show that while Caleb has a suprisingly playful side, he also has a dark, twisted, and sinister side to him which can be expressed through the high contrast and shadows.

This photo is a part of my set of natural lighting photos. This is a straight-on shot with frontal lighting, but it was a cloudly day so the light is very diffused and not very prominent. I used this lighting, and my clever humor to capture Caleb smiling at my joke, bringing out the bright, playful side of his personality, which I feel this bright lighting reflects.

First Photo Post

This was one of the images i took for my photo assignment involving taking 25 pictures that are a part of someone's life. This image is my set of basement stairs. I chose to take a picture of the stairs because they are a key part of my life and my hobbies. My hobbie is playing video games and playing the drums, so everyday after school, i go down these stairs to the basement to play my video games and make music on my drums. Because my drums, my video games and TV are all in the basement, everyone in my family jokes about how i live in the basement and that it's like my lair or crypt because of how dimly lit the basement is. I reflected these observations in my work by using a high angle shot to give the feeling of the stairs descending deep down into oblivion. To reflect the idea that it's my dark crypt, i turned the photo black and white, adjusted the contrast, and added a dust/grain filter to give it a gritty and morbid theme.

Artist Statement

I think that my artwork is made up of things I find in everyday life. If I’m walking along and a very peculiar tree catches my eye, I’ll find the right lighting and take a picture. Or if I am particularly moved by a lone rundown building in the metro, I’ll capture it with a picture. Sometimes they just appear out of nowhere, sometimes I hunt deliberately for them, but it’s the subjects of existence that are portrayed in my photos.
